Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love each other.
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake right now.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
